Conference Background

 

The National Council of Churches in India has been working on issues relating to human sexuality and gender identities since the first Study on Human Sexuality in Ooty in 2001. From our experience during our work in HIV and AIDS among the churches, between 2003‐2015, especially under the ESHA program, we came to realize the need to prioritize the issues around the “Key Affected Populations,” particularly those relating to the LGBTI communities. Pearl Wong, director of QTA, was invited as a session speaker by the Society of Asian Biblical Studies (SABS) conference 2018 from July 16-20 in Malang, Indonesia, attended by almost 100 participants.  The session is Queer readings in and for Asia, Pearl’s presentation is titled “Queering Hermeneutics in Asian-Chinese Contexts” during which she introduced the latest book published by QTA. QTA applied to be one of 11 speakers of Ethics of Reprocity Conference (EOR) in early July. As the representative of Queer Theology Academy and Covenant of the Rainbow: Campaign Towards a Truly Inclusive Church, she is invited to attend the symposium of “Ethics of Reciprocity: UN Dialogue of LGBTI Religious Leaders”at United Nations, headquarters, New York. One of the sponsors of this event is UN LGBTI Core Group.

A coalition allies was founded in 2015 between Christian groups and churches working together for the human rights of sexual minorities (LGBTI people). Partners are from Asia: Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong (QTA), Europe, USA, Africa, and Metropolitan Community Churches, International (MCC). We meet and exchange reports regularly via Skype.
